My Eco Fashion Story: How My Perception of Fashion Completely Transformed
MY ECO FASHION JOURNEY
Before I dive into more eco fashion posts, Iβd love to tell my story of why I am so passionate about this topic.
Flashback to year one of college. Starting out fresh as a fashion design major, my mind was ambient with inspiration from runways, techniques, + fashion bloggers. I adored altering clothing from thrift shores + making it my own. Just the concept of wearable art made my eyes light up with motivation. I was so happy with the thought that my future career would allow me to create my own world of design.
In the first two years of college I loved everything about the fashion world. I learned about different fabrics, the history of fashion, how to design a collection + so much more. But when the third year came around + I was introduced to the sustainable + ethical side, my whole perspective shifted. I still looked at fashion as a beautiful expression of oneself, but deep down I knew the dark truths lying beneath the aesthetically pleasing surface. In that year I realized the true sacrifice made to produce our clothing. It felt so wrong + left me questioning if I even wanted to be in an industry that would do such despicable things to garment workers + the environment.Β
If I had known how destructive the fashion industry was before going into fashion design I would have probably picked a different career. No lie. Learning about the industryβs damaging effects is one thing, but working for fashion companies that directly support what your heart + ethics are totally against is something completely different.
I want to help change the industry.
I want to spread the word about sustainable + ethical fashion so change can start with the single most powerful source out there: the consumer. YOU have the power to change the industry + so does everyone around you! Iβm going to warn you, this is not going to be easy. It requires you to take action + have a whole lot of empathy, but the power is in our hands. As soon as awareness is spread the industry can change for the benefit of the people who make our clothes, us as consumers, + the planet!
Thank you for listening to my story; I look forward to sharing more informational eco fashion posts in the near future!
