Horseshoe Bend
If you’re looking for an experience that that will make you question your reality, Horseshoe Bend is the place. Over millions of years the Colorado River has worn away the canyon + created a curved “horseshoe” shaped switchback where the river still flows today. The bend is a part of the Grand Canyon, but is inside Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
THE JOURNEY
From the Horseshoe Bend parking lot you will start your trek up the side of a hill. Once you reach the top it’s easy to see the rest of the downward path. The hike is about 1.25 miles round trip + will take approximately 30 minutes or more to complete the entire hike. Even though this hike is on the shorter side, be sure to bring water + proper footwear. It can get very hot during the summer months!
I’ve been to Horseshoe Bend twice + the second time I noticed a fence was installed to the left of the lookout. Unfortunately you won’t be able to go too far in that direction, but on the positive side I believe it was placed for conservation + safety precautions. Horseshoe Bend can be quite a popular spot for tourists, so if you’re looking for solitude + a good photograph I would go in the early morning! It’s only around 10 minutes South of Page, Arizona, which is home to many other incredible historical + naturally beautiful locations!

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE SUMMARY
Horseshoe Bend was on my bucket list for quite some time + it certainly went way above + beyond my highest expectations. I significantly remember the last few steps before I could take my first glance. As I looked into the canyon my heartbeat picked up + I became awestruck with emotion. I kept wondering if it was truly real because my mind could not wrap around the vastness of the landscape + the brilliant rainbow of natural color. As I sat near the edge the wind blew through my flower-filled hair + the sun hid behind the clouds for just a moment. A couple enjoyed the view to my one side + a photographer captured it on the other. We took in the otherworldly beauty all at once without a single word. I connected so much to this place + strongly advise you to experience it as well!
